    Question about clothing.

    Hi, my name is Amber, and I'm pretty new to kendo
    this is also my first post here.
    I've been wondering about this question for quite a long time, and I can't find an answer to it!

    -Official keikogi for women is white (though not many women wear it anymore). Why do women wear white keikogi? Isn't white the color of death? I can't find the reason anywhere... My sensei told me it's because women in japan didn't fight, but that doesn't seem that accurate, ne...

    Im sorry i dont know that answer lol

    I do Iai and Kenjutsu, i was wondering if anyone knows what the difference between the mens and womens hakama is, because i wear normal ones and i find my obi is too high and it makes some moves difficult...

    You need to push your obi down a little and chop a few inches off your hakama.

    White is the colour of many things. In the same way, in the west black has more meanings than just death. Lots of budoka (men and women) wear white keikogi. It's certainly not limited to women.

    I don't know how accurate it is, but this page (Japanese) says that white keikogi was popularised by Nakayama Hakudo, who perhaps took it from Shinto (where it symbolises, amongst other things, purity). The page says that wearing white keikogi is popular with female budoka because it looks elegant and beautiful.

    It also says keeping it's damn hard to keep it clean.
