    He potentially had a history of mental problems, and his sexuality was apparently closely tied to the fortunes of a sports team.

    I don't think it has anything to do with rugby. This sounds closer to good old football hooliganry to me.

    I don't recall football hooligans cutting their own goolies off. Just trying to damage other people's.
