    There were only something like 38 competitors, and at least 6 were students. Some were rank beginners and stood no chance (as far as my inexperienced eyes could see).

    Watanabe was defeated by Suzuki.
    Tanaka was nonparticipation.

    Male?? Naginata should not be devided. The males are just as good as the females.

    There is always a men's and women's division in naginata, kendo, karate, judo... you name it. It has nothing to do with skill.

    Yes, and to us Europeans the Men's seems "more exciting" in terms of level, because the European level is just so "up there" (& so very close re: standard !!!) with the Japanese guys that we saw at the recent Worlds.

    Without a derogatory tone, the women's level (Japan) has a longer history so the standard is higher, and the gap wider re: comparison of Japanese ladies to non-Japanese ladies catagory. Nothing sexist here in tone or comment.
