    Shinaido?

A coworker of mine saw the picture of me with my iaito (see my avatar) and mentioned that he does "fencing with a shinai," which he later revealed to be called "shinaido." Apparently you use a shinai, and wear men, kote, and some sort of elbow pads, but not the rest of the kendo bogu.

I have a sneaking suspicion is that this is a McDojo-esque "made up" sport, but I'm just wondering if anybody else has heard of it? He knew nothing of the names of the armor parts, and in fact only his helmet is actually a kendo part. The others are just hockey gloves and elbow pads, because they were "cheaper than buying the real stuff" (his words).

    Just curious...

So in other words, they coolest looking part of the bogu is the only part they want to wear. I feel pretty safe saying that whatever it is he is doing, is completely made up. If it isn't...still sounds corny.

Wow, that may be it...he is a coworker at our SoCal office. Although they're not wearing helmets of any sort, and I don't see him among the "fighter profiles"...

Why do you keep posting this?
It wasn't funny then, and it's not funny now.

Trust me, I know something of unfunny.

As a SoCal resident, I can verify the existence of this group.

    ...and....there..are...others...

No, never participated with any of them, but many years ago I used to co-run a forge that made custom Sword replicas for the RenFaire crowd, and sometimes we would set up shop at gatherings of these kinds of groups if we learned of their locations.

All I am willing to say,... is that they take themselves very seriously.
Too seriously if you ask me.
