I was told number of 7th dan senseis that we should clap really loud to cheer your teammate. You are not allowed to scream though.. Can anyone confirm this ?

you know over here its the same. It’s impossible to get a do, even if the other person has both hands above their heads.

The sensei/shinpan argue that if they award do, then everyone will hit do all the time. But I think if they start giving do, kamae will be stronger, defense will be cleaner, and kote and men will open up more.

I personally think that the ones that are anti do are the ones who cannot hit it to save their lives. Yea, nice sensei, can’t even hit a do. Maybe you should give your menjo back.

Haha if THAT was the case they also should stop giving men and kote since everybody is doing that :P I think they should check on the hiki-do's because they are hit a lot of the time but hardly given

Thats because most beginners tend to be moving backwards when doing hiki do... I was taught that the initial do strike should still have a forwards movement and that as soon as the do has been struck do you move backwards...

That is why most beginners never score a point on hiki do's - or so I was taught!

But hell, what do I know...

This is exactly it. If people thought that they were in as much danger from raising their arms as they were from dropping their kensen, they simply wouldn't do it.

what would boxing be with out the body shots?

I suppose a piece of undeserved paper carries more influence than common sense.

This is one of my pet peeves, it is ridiculous the way doh is ignored. Same with hiki waza. Actually when doing test cutting I found I could cut even stronger doing hiki waza.
They sure take doh in Japan, but in the US it is like they have to be sooo perfect before some shinpan will score them.
Now having said that, I see so many of the kyu who don't have a strong men trying to hit doh when it is not open nor do they know how to create the opening. Instead they just whack people in the elbow. My favorite amongst the beginners is the kote-men-hiki elbow combo.

boxing would be nothing without the Body shot (left hook to the ribs, or right upper cut to the stomach). It's the only way to slow down a runner or someone that constantly goes into the crab defense(both arms crossed over the head, used by greats like Joe frazier & George Forman). plus it's the only shot that hurts: the shots to the head just make you sleepy

We've got about the same problem here in the Netherlands. So we tend to make our do's and hiki-do's only when Vitalis-sensei is one of the shimpan :P ofcourse it has to be good, but not like All-Japan-Final-perfect :P

Also about what was said earlier, how the heck can you make hiki-do while moving forward first? I'd say get the hell out of there after the hit and leave your opponent stunned. And thats also what Vitalis-sensei tells us. If you can't get away fast enough, your opponent might get the chance to follow you. It's true it's not ALWAYS the case, because in shiai a good timing might be good enough. Ah well. I think there's some room for some difference in opinions here, depending on your sensei

I've never heard that. The usual problems preventing people from scoring hiki-doh include too close, bad hasuji, weak hit, no reason, poor zanshin.
