The "score points to win" concept is inherit in many other sports, such as basketball, tennis, and soccer, yet we do not talk about "live or die" concepts in those sports.

This sounds like one of my friends. He watched Fight Club too many times and has been trying to convince me that we need to fight because it'll "make me a man" Woohoo. I dont agree with him of course, but thats beside the point. Notice the topic is *fighting* =). Not Kendo in particular, but in all sports its not just a boring situation where you're only thinking about hitting a little ball through a whatever. There is a fierceness in competition, and adrenaline is pretty addicting. I think that's clear considering all the various activities out there =).
