    Unhappy splintered shinai

after the tournament i went to yesterday, i noticed my shinai was splintered a bit, its a verticle small piece missing from the bamboo slat of the blade side, near the nakayui, should i replace it or just sandpaper it down?

A few weeks ago, mine started to splinter in the same spot. i sanded it down, but its starting to splinter again. I'm going to rotate the bamboo slats around. My suggestion is you should probably do the same so a different one is getting a majority of the wear.

the splinters are normal, you should just check before each practice if there aren't any loose ones and sandpaper it from time to time.

talking of splinters...... after my shiai yesterday, there was a splinter of about 5cm sticking in my right kote! :|

Mystic: hebt gij ni tegen mensen van Butokukan moeten "vechten" (ik weet niet hoe ik het moet zeggen voor technische tornooien ), btw?

by rotate, u mean just take the leather pieces off, and put them back on after you just twist the bamboo 90 degrees or something? or is it more complicated?

it's just taking the pieces of and put them back on so that you're hitting with one of the other staves.

but just checking it regularly and sanpaper it from time to time will do, I think

    Hi,

After you sandpaper it, I suggest that you rub wax over the bit you sanded. I use a candle. You can also put some oil on it. The wax/oil just helps seal the bit you've sanded so that it will splinter again less quickly.

That sort of splintering is fairly normal. I rotate the handle on my shinai fairly regularly so that I am use all of the slats (at some time or another) as the cutting edge.
