what usually do novices wear in kendo dojo?

hi,

I want to learn Kendo, but there is no kendo dojo in my country;/
I'll try to go abroad, to Japan, and I'd like some questions to be answered: what
clothes I have to bring with me...
what usually do novices wear in kendo dojo?

I have aikido white gi and black hakama, does it fit for beginer?

That should be fine. If you go to Japan they may ask you to buy a kendo gi but I think an aikido gi would be ok for a beginer. Good luck and have fun!

That sounds fine, indeed.
But any sportswear is good, as long as you feel at ease in it.

Many dojo request that beginners do not wear hakama. It makes it difficult for the instructors to see your feet and make corrections while you are learning the basic footwork. Some dojo (not ours) make being allowed to wear hakama a sort of first ranking, associated with a certain skill level or even a test. By all means bring your aikido stuff to Japan, just don't expect to wear it right away.

Az a beginna, i suggest wearin chill fittin threadz such as sweatz from Sean John or Wu-Tang....................

I don't know what the above people are talking about. Beginners arrive at dojos suponpon. You have to earn every piece of covering.

When I started, it was the old sweats and a (hopefully) clean t-shirt.

After a while, I was dating a young lady who happened to be doing Kendo in another city. As a gesture of kindness, one birthday she presented me with a fine set of inexpensive "blues"... I was delighted--and a bit worried. Neither of us knew if it would be OK for me to wear them, as I had only been practicing a mere month or two.

So, I knelt before the O'sensei and humbly requested pemission.

"Sure!" came the response as he toweled the sweat from his head... in a manner that indicated some real pleasure at my request.

Next practice, I wore 'em and felt like a real and serious Kendo student. I dare say that my Gi and Hakama even helped keep me enthusiastic about Kendo... after all... no matter what my skills my have indicated, I "looked the part".

SO...

The way I understand it, it is a matter to be decided by our Sempai and sensei... as so much of Kendo is for the beginner (and even our masters).

Fo sho, fo sho. I was sportin' mah sweats yo, -n- mah nautica t-shirt. I had 2 keep itz gangsta, homie. I had to rep tha SOUTHSIDE! We keep itz gangsta ova thur. I was like a thug gurl yo.

Haha sorry, I just had to do that. Anyway, just stick with sweats and a t-shirt for as long as you possibly can. I know there are most people that want to fit in with the class asap, but don't. Your hakama sleeve will totally mess up your footwork. It's better to let your sensei see everything, so he or she can correct it. You wouldn't want to tear up your achilles tendon now would you ?

If I understand correctly, some dojo are particular about, not only whether you wear a hakama or not, but what color it may be. I guess some dojo have specific dress codes, or maybe associate certain color hakama with your grade? I don't know. Our dojo doesn't do this, I've only heard stories. Of course, I may have been misinformed about the whole color-thing.

The Basic rule of clothing for a beginner ??

For Women:
Where two piece bikini to class, ensure it really reviews your cleavage... That way, you will get plenty of attention from sensei and sempai...

For men:
Pray hard it is a lady who gonna teach you... if so, you can wear a tight fitting triangular swimming short........ Problem is, if you have a mascular body, sensei and sempai will hate you, and it will a living hell for you. If you are a fat slob or skinny idiot, it is still a living hell for you, because you are an eye sore for them.........

When I started practicing Kendo, I wore a white Taekwondo trouser and a simple black T-Shirt. In our Dojo you can wear Hakama and Gi after you learned (or knew) the basics - footwork, Men, Kote, Do and fumikomi.This will take a few months. Most people buy hakama and gi when they decide to stay with Kendo and to continue training, because the clothing is quite expensive over here in Germany.
