    Florida Geiko...

Geiko with Maeda sensei.. Bunch of kendokas from Tampa, FL, visited Orlando dojos over the weekend and geiko with fellow kendokas. Orlando dojo does not have any AC and it was freaking hot... Everyone was exhausted but we had great time.

    Video 1: With Maeda sensei

Video 2: Jay sensei and me

Video 3: Maeda sensei(7th dan) and Jay sensei(4th dan)

    Thumbs up

    comparing previous videos you've posted,

what are some of the things (good or bad) that you can immediately identify that hasn't changed?

I am assuming that you are mentioning about my kendo.. I have been focussing on toma-maai, seme and men. I used to focus on quick hitting, kote and small men. However, after I have been practicing with Maeda sensei for 1 1/2 year and he has been changing my kendo 180% degree. I even forgot how to do small men at this time. Anyway, that is how I felt. I am not sure if others can see that...

    Lightbulb

that's great, I can tell Maeda sensei's influence in your kendo. He's a good teacher, i like him very much.

just some food for thought here, (rhetorical questions, nothing fancy)

Q: is your tomaa the same as your opponents tomma? if "yes" how does that change our strategy against the opponent? if "no", what advantage or disadvantage will it bring?
Q: What happens when your toma is your aite's uchima? Is it harder or easier to gain the "iniative"?
Q: What does attacking from toma really do for us?
Q: is "initiating" the attack from toma the same as "attacking" from toma?
Q: Do strikes from toma always have to be big or can it differ depending on the circumstance?
Q: Is toma a physical distance or is it a mental distance between us and the aite? if mental then can we close this distance by not moving?

i think if we look at the exchange between you and maeda sensei at 1:56 in the first video and and compare and contrast the difference with the 2nd video against Jay sensei. Then we can gain more understanding as to why we do what we do, and how we can do it better. no? and make better sense of "video" as a tool to improve. hahahaha. ignore this if it makes no sense. don't mind me.

I envy you the dojo, btw. It looks really nice. Reminds me of dojos in Korea out in the country. Beautiful, great floor, hot and humid with a massive fan that tries to cool you down and really just makes a lot of noise.

Q: is your tomaa the same as your opponents tomma?

=> Ideal situation, yes. It will give you 50:50 chance. If it is too close, you maybe depending on speed and reflection.

if "yes" how does that change our strategy against the opponent? if "no", what advantage or disadvantage will it bring?

=> As you getting older, you should spend more time on seme and controling situation or dominate your opponents. However, you maybe having hard time with someone who is younger, faster and good reflection. If you think this is real sword fighting, would you be focusing on speed, hitting and reflection ? Probably not. You should be more careful and instead of hitting, you want to cut your opponents at your will. Tomma kamai is not only distance but you will have to practice seme as well.

Q: What happens when your toma is your aite's uchima? Is it harder or easier to gain the "iniative"?

=> Again, the your toma is your aite's uchima, you are not really controlling the situation. You are being controlled. Toma and seme has to be practiced together. I assume Initiative means seme and not it is not easy to learn seme..... But I found it very advantage against faster keshika.

Q: What does attacking from toma really do for us?

=> 50:50% chance. As I explained earlier, you can rely on seme instead of speed and reflection. If you are at issoku-ito, it is very difficult to seme.

Q: is "initiating" the attack from toma the same as "attacking" from toma?

=> Hard to attack from toma. You have to seme and attack. If your seme is bad, it is not going to do any good.

Q: Do strikes from toma always have to be big or can it differ depending on the circumstance?

=> Depending on circurmstance. Maeda sensei emphasize both small and big men. However, both has to be the 1) movement of left hand and 2) strong impact, not hitting, must be cut.

Q: Is toma a physical distance or is it a mental distance between us and the aite? if mental then can we close this distance by not moving?

=> I think it is physical distance. It maybe mental distance as you become higher rank and I am not there yet. From Toma maai, you have to work on strong seme and mind to dominate your opponent. If you look at me and Maeda sensei's geiko, you can easily see that he is dominating my movement. I either step back, become hesitate or being less patient.. When he fight with taller guys, he initiate movement with seme and men.

Please watch Maeda sensei's maai and seme, and also reaction of other kenshi..

Ahh isn't that always the way with video. When in keiko its hard to diagnose yourself, but then the impartial camera lets us know the things we are doing poorly. I have often been surprised by watching video of myself with all the little things I see I can improve upon.
