Thread: HA! Your shinai is dead!

    HA! Your shinai is dead!

There aren't that many interesting new threads lately, so I'm going to start one, and I apologize if there's already a thread like this (it's just too tedious to search for old threads). What do you guys like to do to a person with a strong chudan no kamae, or with a strong center? Of course it's to make them break their center or for you to take it, but what exactly do you do to make them break it? Do you like to kiai, fake a strike, smack that shinai off center? Things like that. What's your preference? I'm just a curious pikachu, that's all ^_^. I like to kiai my loudest to see if I get a reaction.

Thank you for being the only one out of a hundred something people to respond =) haha. I think my thread title attracted a lot of people hahah, until they read the content LOL.

i just go for men, see if he's fast enough to get my kote or maybe do. If he tries to block the men, then it's easy to deal with. If he does debana wazas, then i have to do other stuff to get to him.

You're talking about the type of kamae, where if you don't break their kamae, you end up impaling yourself when you attack, right?.

If your seme isn't strong enough to break his center and hassle him, then the 'cheap' way is kote-men. You don't have to hit the kote, tsuba or base of the shinai is often enough.
Often one or two of these will be enough to get the opponent worried and you can start contesting the center.

Harai-waza is also an option, but often you'll find that they will read it and use it as an option counter-attack. You will also need to vary the way you are attacking the shinai.
This, however, in my experience doesnt allow you to go back and contest the center..they will just be wiser to your 'tricks'.

Impaling... how sporting. Some people do it everytime you attack. Lack of generosity in their kendo: It's a last second move to stick you in the throat despite the fact that you beat him to the punch (maybe)... that sounds like sour grapes... and it is!

Anyway, I remember one Japanese guy I saw (a daigakusei) that would get jammed up by someone that stuck you in the throat on any attack (a horrible way to teach AND practice IMHO). He took the rather original step of simply using his tsuka to knock the opponent's shinai's tip from his throat guard and counter with a men, sometimes one handed.

There is of course the age old method of actually removing the shinai tip with a free hand in frustration to what can become a real pain in the ass at one point.

I'll see if I can emulate the Japanese student I saw in two weeks... gonna visit with someone that impales like crazy.

Of course maybe you're just talking about people that DON'T MOVE... no matter what you do. You can't attack because you can't take the center... I have no advice on what to do... Try taking the center? Or do what Harry does.. hit the guy in the butt.

    Question

My sensei showed me a strike the other day..its a begginers one. It starts in chudan no kamae..you swing it up in a stright large motion...but from there im not sure if it goes all the way behind you(touching your butt) or stops right above your head, bout six inches....WHICH IS IT?????

Treat this topic like a favorite waza thread, everyone. I didn't expect to be given advice, but errr thanks anyway . Keep up whatever you feel like posting in this thread up ^_^. I just chose a kenshi/sensei with an immovable kamae as an example because I can't think of anything better. Anyone can chose any type of kenshi (speed, kamae, height, style, etc.), but tell me what's your favorite thing to do against them.

Mwahaha Mr. Potter is more patient than me, the sleeping pikachu? Yes, someday we'll have to see, Harry! I'll be waiting for you patiently haha. Let's see who comes to who first! Probably me =X, but that doesnt prove anything!

Nice attempt at sarcasm, but it would be more convincing if you had a clue what we were talking about..
