    "Karate guy" with a katana

Don't know why the National Geo channel invited an action stuntmen/calvin klein model or whatever to perform in an episode about japanese swords. My guess is they wanted to add some comedy to the show since Mr Obata and his student were too serious looking.

It was just recently posted in fact, we came to the conclusion that the guy with no shirt was an extra in Broke Back Mountain and does karate in his spare time.

This Fight science pops up a few times a year. The last time was a month ago

No matter how much I watch the vid, it still pretty damn sad. This is what you get if you mix pseudo science with MA

Aside from the pseudo science and MA mix, i can't understand why they brought a "clown" and an expert for the same show, i wouldn't be disappointed if the show was on MTV but i guess it is all entertainment as long as the majority of viewers are satisfied but that's another subject.

Jesus Christ, how hard can it be to make a program about martial arts that doesn't suck balls? National Geographic really should know better.

Come for the posing, stay for the ridiculous facial expressions and steroid abuse (I'M SO FUCKING PUMPED ABOUT THIS SWORD RAAAAAAAA)

If I'm gonna suck at Kendo, I may as well be cheerful about it

Well I get it that it's entertainment, and I also get it that the producers of a show like this tend to find the guys who are easiest to find. I've been involved in a couple of such things myself, the local/national media tends to find me quite often when looking at such stuff so if you're in California you find these guys.

But there's no way in the world that I'd be looking to get into Japanese sword if this show is what I'm shown as representative of the arts. These things do a dis-service to the arts.

In fact, I don't want the kids who see these things wasting their time and mine coming to my class. I'm just going to disappoint them.

So what's the solution? Well the folks that hate public displays are not going to get involved in them, and are not going to put videos on youtube showing what the arts are really like, so I guess there's nothing to be done by them.

Myself, I never turn these guys down because it's a small chance to show something other than the karate tournament stuff. They'll find someone, they've got the money for the show, and if it's not someone traditional it's going to be the flash and trash... Hell it will be anyway but they just might put in the dull stuff for contrast.

    Bren Foster!!! Master Swordfighter!!!

    WOW!!!!

Haven't seen that little gem in a long time. He's great, isn't he? Obata sensei is cool, but that talkative little taekwon do master really takes the cake. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like Obata would have been a much better choice for that stupid ballistic gel test, and probably declined on premise.

Just wondering, isnt the katana a two handed sword only? One thing i dont like about samurai movies and stuff is characters handling massive blades with one hand and striking stupid poses.
