If you're in the mood to feel inadequate, try watching this.

Thanks for sharing the vid, that was awesome.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be sobbing quietly in the corner.

And the sad thing is that the other guy wasn't pulling punches... Is there any space left in the corner?

One more sad thing is that Eiga is smiling while he is executing oji-waza..... And I am crying....

Red face He may have said...

At first, it seems the Awesome One said the attacker was fast and strong; that there're various techniques (waza); then, please applaud;and when he was demonstrating, said again there are various techniques but use Kiai and don't wait. The last part when he was gesturing with his hand, I couldn't hear any dialogue. Anyway, others with better Japanese skills surely will comment in detail.

Kids' sensei kiai's and strikes men, Eiga blocks

"Now, against this men strike, this very wonderful and fast men strike by [inaudible]-sensei, there are various techniques you can use. Now we'll go bam-bam, back and forth, and I'll show you what you can do. Ok, against a men strike...I'll explain later, but just watch and see what one can do against a men strike.
    DOOOUUUU!!!
    MEEEENNNNN!!!!
    KOTEEEEiiii!!!
    MEEEEENNNN!!!!
    DOOOUUUU!!!
    DOOOUUUU!!!
    MEEENN-- Applause, applause!!!"

Kids applaud. I think Eiga was waiting for a applause after a number of techniques to end the demonstration, but the kids were too enthralled, so he had to encourage them himself.

"When a men is coming, even if you can't get a dou, if you watch [the opponent] carefully you can respond in a number of ways. For example one technique is to use kiai, come in for an attack, and use that to draw out his attack, without waiting." (The sound's a little fuzzy, particularly on the last part, so this is not an exact translation.)

After another demonstration, he calls for a round of applause for the sensei demonstrating with him.

That corner better be big, because I do think half the forum will want to sit there.

    ...

I couldn't even get a suriage or kaeshi correct against my senpai going at half speed *cries*

If you want to feel really bad, figure that this was half speed for Eiga. Even I could pick up (and admire) the blindingly fast kote-men combos, and I suspect I wouldn't be able to do that if he was going full speed. He was obviously pacing himself so the kids could see the techniques.

    Amazing,

Not like western demonstrations where its like:

"hit my men and I'll show you an oji waza"
    Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen

"no not like that, hit slower"
    Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen

"No not like that, you need to swing big"
    Meeeeeeeeeeeeeen

"Not, like that your feet are moving to fast"
(Kakaraite now hits an incredibly slow and daft men)

I usually see it demo'd full speed, and that's the way I demo it myself. Full-speed in our club just isn't anywhere near what's shown in that video.
