I think relaxing and not using strength has been the most difficult thing for me to try and overcome.
You'll have to come out and do some tameshigiri sometime Dan. It's instant feedback on using too much strength in a cut.

Dan...lets go over this next practice. We've been practicing alot of Chiburi lately, especially with the testing coming. The pain may be due to the repetition and a little rest is what you need.

Heres something i wonder. Could this pain be from swinging a sword too big for me. A freind was showing me a sword this weekend that was a 2-4-5. it felt glorious it stopped when i wanted it too no bouncing or anything. I compared it to my Iaito and mine was at least an inch longer maybe an inch and a half. Thats got me thinking. Could my sword be part of the problem????? I am sure tat i still carry fault for some things, but could this add to the problem. Opinions anyone???????

it could be, but length in itself is not a problem. Weight can be an issue, but even more, balance will have the biggest effect.
The problem is, a light sword is not good for iaido, nor is a very heavy one. If what you are using is about 2.5-2.6, then 900g-1.2 Kg should be manageable, but it really will depend on the balance. An 800g sword can feel heavier than an 1.2 Kg sword if the balance is bad, and it is the balance that makes it difficult to control, and lack of control at the end of an action is most likely the issue.

Ultimately it is bad technique that is causing the problem, and it is all too easy to blame the sword (general comment there, I'm not making an accusation), though once injury has occurred, a bad sword would make recovery more difficult.

Try training with a light weight bokken for a couple of weeks and see if the problem improves.

In training I get beaten by kaso tekki regularly, but I try not to let it happen in public.
