    My new shinai

    hello all

I'm going to start kendo in a few week, and I asked a friend to bring me back a brend new shinai from JAPAN. I allready know that my dojo is going to lend me all the stuff but would it be better to start with my own shinai ????

It all depends on the availability of money, and how serious you are about kendo. You only need one shinai for your first 3 or 4 weeks, but after that you should get another one just incase your first one breaks. To answer your question completly, I would say go with a cheapy. Right now, thats all you need. Your not going to go to tourneys for a while, and definatly arn't going to be tested for a long while, so just find an ok practice shinai for about 20-35$ and go for it. Plus, more than half kendo students drop out in there first several weeks, and to buy a 75$ shinai, and never actually use its full life is pretty ironic.
As always, your fashionably expected, but casually late...

You should have choose your own shinai that speaks to u. Shinai has diff in their weight balance and the girp. Guys shinai is longer at the handle than the gals by an inch. Anyway, like the pervious post, most ppl will drop will soon after few weeks of training. Buy the cheapest first.

Kendo is for everyone n also not for everyone.

You are probably better off just get a cheap model. *From a descent shop. I have heard about people buying from places and getting dried out shinai.* As you progress you will know what you need. Have fun and enjoy kendo!

I would be disturbed beyond belief if I faced a kendoka with a talking shinai.

A preference for beginners is the musim, which can be found at kendoshop.com. its relatively cheap, and can last quite awhile....when you get alot better, i reccomend a carbon shinai. Its VERY expenisive, but worth it.

Well, next time, put your thing back in your hakama and use your shinai.
