Hmmmm. I'll have to get home and check that out for certain, but I suspect its the kashira that moves first as though I'm pulling a rope over my head. I'll report back later.

I've only just realised that the Iai book I pour over on every occasion and is, indeed, my bible, is written by your good self!

If that's your bible and Peter is the author, what does that make him?!

I think 'ecclesiatical scholar' is a wonderful title! You should wear it proudly from now on Peter!

As atheistic followers of the writings of Richard Dawkins, should we be collectively known as Dawkists? (Or Dawks for short)

Also look at the timing of your cuts:

I have been getting tachikaze inconsistantly.
I have tachikaze when cutting immediately after a turn. I have realised I was concentrating on the turn so much I "forgot" the sword and cut well, getting tachikaze. But almost all the time when just cutting and stepping (suburi or sougiri for example) I was "trying too hard" but also cutting on the back foot. Rather than stepping and cutting as the leading foot landed, with the left foot "landing" immediately as the cut is complete (I probably haven't explained that well), my cut was finishing as my rear foot landed - also leading to a stance that is too upright.

I am now working hard to correct the timing of my akuri ashi (footwork); and working hard to NOT try hard when cutting . . . if that makes sense.

Hope this helps in some way.

The discussion of tachikaze and hasuji was a pretty good one, which I never thought much before (I guess my hasuji is fairly good then?). We all played around with that this past weekend to see how different totally improper hasuji effected the pitch/loudness.
I remember some guy asking Liang Baiping what the philosphy of Taiji was. Baiping looked at him and said, "The philosophy of Taiji is to crash through to their center and kill them".

Yes that's a good point! I produce tachikaze in shihogiri, morote tsuki et al. all of which involve turning. Perhaps the power in the turn in contributing to the power of the cut.

I haven't had a chance to try these ideas since the snow led to our Sunday class being cancelled

Its nice to hear this board is leading to discussion in the dojo-discussion is good. Its a shame we can't all get together and share ideas with 'sword in hand'.
