Have you been shown by your sensei and/or sempai or did your bogu just arrive in the mail and you're itching to get it ready? At any rate, you're going to have to break in the men so this site should help you out for both.

Once you have the himo on the mengane, just bring it behind the men, around the front, and underneath the center bar. If you get confused, ask your sensei and sempai for help.

    1. Arrive to practice early.
    2. Ask for help.

If all else fails, stock up on plenty of Sellotape!

For those suggesting he waits till Sunday to ask his sensei, while your advice is technically correct, forshame . You have clearly forgotten the joy of opening your first set of bogu. One can not just let it sit there for 3 or 4 days untouched, it must be picked up, tried on and looked at in the mirror.

I'll second the website http://halifaxkendo.org/articles/men.html. When combined with this website http://www6.big.or.jp/~budogu/manu/topm.htm I was able to get everything ready without too much issue.

I'll be sure to bookmark those sites, I've yet to buy my first set of Bogu, and tying knots has always been a weak point of mine, anything other than shoelaces fails horribly for me.

Well good news then, tying men himo is like tying a shoe behind your head. Same knot and everything.

The knots you need to tie the men and lower dou himo are the same as for a shoelace, assuming you're tying those correctly. Learn the difference between a granny knot, and a square knot. The granny is weaker, and will capsize under strain, causing the loops and ends to be at a ninety degree angle from the rest of the himo. You always want to use a square knot for the men and the lower dou himo.

However, the actual knots to tie your himo onto your bogu and to set up your shiani shinai can be a bit intimidating. I know I was extremely confused as to what all those bits of leather did

Heheh, I got my first bogu two weeks ago.
I only had one day to figure it out...
I searched a lot but I couldn't fully figure it out either.
In the end I just turned up about 45 min early on practice, and one of my sempei happily tied it correctly for me.
They simply were happy I got one and didn't care about my preparation at all.
It's about the idea of trying I guess, and of course trying it on, looking in the mirror and all of those happy moments <333

If I were you I'd rather focus on how to put on the tenugui, tare and bogu for now.
Also, you might want to tighten your kote himo! ~ The smaller it fits, the harder it is to hit for your opponent.
(also, excuse my poor English please ' w ' )

    Have fun Sunday! ^_^

StealthMonkey mentioned it above and it's even a sticky post in this subforum: the kendo equipment manual PDF (english version) is indispensible and has taught me everything I need to know about bogu and shinai maintenance.
…and we never did find the other shoe! …primarily for their own health! …into an early grave! …ground floor, watch your step!

He thoguht it was a funny joke for our new years training,
