    Samurai Films

Any good, modern Samurai films people can recommend?

'When the Last Sword is Drawn' is really excellent as is 'Twilight Samurai'. A slightly different samurai flick is 'Samurai Fiction'-its comical, its in black and white (Kurosawa homage?) and has a great, raucous sound track by Tomoyasu Hotei (who's also the villain in the film). 'Ichi' is rather good-a better sequel to 'Zaitoichi' in my opinion.

Also, why do they dub the sound of a sword being pulled from a metallic scabbard in samurai films? Its really irritating!

Personally, I think the best samurai movie made in the west is Ghost Dog.

Close, but no cigar. The story really didn't need Whittaker's sword scenes. I found them distracting but figured that since "Samurai" was in the title the director or producer or screenwriter must have maintained the story would not be complete without it because shiny, swishy samurai blades are fascinating to western audiences. Just ask Quentin.

"Hidden Blade" and "Love and Honour" are both excellent.

First person to say Kill Bill gets chased down and murdered with a snake.
If I'm gonna suck at Kendo, I may as well be cheerful about it

Shigurui Death Frenzy is a 12 episode anime series. Very good but requires a strong stomach. The series feels incomplete as it only covers the first chapter of the book it's based on.

    What about "Murder William?"

I would counter with high plains drifter or any other western remake of a chanbara film.
I remember some guy asking Liang Baiping what the philosphy of Taiji was. Baiping looked at him and said, "The philosophy of Taiji is to crash through to their center and kill them".

I rather liked Samurai Fiction myself, but it's very definitely aimed at the EmptyVee generation. When you get right down to it, for Jidaigeki, no one making films today comes close to Kurosawa-sensei. It's a damn shame that he parted ways with Mifune-sama over Redbeard, because they could have gone on making wonderful cinema together.

Alas, both are now dead, of course.

    Red Sun.

Actually quite good - the polar opposite to Last Samurai's Cowboy in Japan.

Charlie boy and Toshiro Mifune are both nails in it.
