I was wondering if anyone might be in Fayetteville this coming fall who could lead a kendo club at the University of Arkansas. They used to have a kendo club (2003 or so) but they don't any more, though I'm sure the school will pitch in some funding to re-start one. I was just wondering if anybody that is around that area or will be this fall, is interested in teaching a club.

    Hi!

    Welcome to the forum.

I've done some research to check this out. They still have a website for kendo at your school, oddly enough. An Giang apparently ran it, and he's at the kendo dojo in Little Rock now. That's the only AUSKF dojo listed on the AUSKF website, and I am not aware of any others.

So... What I'd do is make visits to that dojo when you can(At least once or twice a month.), and see if you can get some help with getting a group together after you've shown you really want to continue kendo.

Have you done kendo before in an AUSKF(All US Kendo Federation) dojo? That will make it even easier for you if you have practiced before. If you haven't, I suggest just going to the dojo once or twice a month to learn. Otherwise, you will be out of luck if you don't go. Asking someone to come out is a lot to ask, if you are a new beginner or even not. You ought to give them a call and see what you can find out. But generally, it is polite to make an effort to go to the dojo first before asking them to send someone out to teach.

    Here is the dojo information:

    Arkansas Kendo Club

    Arkansas Festival Ballet Studio
    10301 N. Rodney Parham Rd.
    Little Rock, AR 72221

    Practice times:

    Fri. 6:30-8:30 pm
    Sun. 4-6pm

    Contact:

    An Giang

    (501) 831-2894

The dojo is approximately 140 miles away making that about a 2 1/2 hour drive give or take. If you have a car, you'll just have to go. Many of us travel more than an hour to the dojo. And, if not, there may be public transportatiion such as a bus or train you could take, I don't know. Depends on the state as to how wired they are for that. If you have friends who have a car and who are interested in kendo, then you can carpool.

Here is the old website for the kendo club that used to be at your school:

    http://www.uark.edu/~kendo/frame_control.htm

To do kendo properly, you really need proper instruction, so I hope you are able to get to the dojo and eventually, maybe get something going there.

Well, I hope this helps! Good luck!
