I carve my own out of century old boat oars at home. Its the only way to be sure its authentic.

If you're looking to buy one, it'd be good to check with your sensei and sempai to see what they recommend. As for me, my first set (tachi and kodachi) was from Koei and I bought a second bokuto from E-bogu.

The bogu buying FAQ thread lists a whole bunch of places, any of those places are good. Of course, ask your sensei and sempai in your dojo first. I would stay away from the gift shops, even if it's Japanese. I bought mine from e-mudo.

i bought my original at century martial arts years ago, but I have no idea where my current one came from.

you can always check e-bogu.com, e-mudo.com,
I remember some guy asking Liang Baiping what the philosphy of Taiji was. Baiping looked at him and said, "The philosophy of Taiji is to crash through to their center and kill them".

I've bought shinai from e-bogu.com and http://boguzen.com. My bokuto was purchased 22 years ago from a martial arts store on Charles street in Baltimore.
