I've had it taught to me wakigamae on both sides by some sensei. That is quite an old video now, not sure if this has changed or whether I was just shown yet another personal interpretation.

I wonder where and when the variation with uchidachi taking wakigamae originated. In "Kensei to Gokui: Nihon Kendō Kata", in neither the embu by Takano sensei and Nakayama sensei nor by Mochida sensei and Goro sensei does uchidachi take wakigamae. (Of course, that doesn't mean that no one in Taisho or early Showa did.) In fact, Takano sensei as uchidachi doesn't even come through jodan to get to chudan. He just brings the sword up over his shoulder to get there. Does anyone know if there's an edition of an official manual or video that contains uchidachi taking wakigamae?
