I do not believe any beginner is able to "watch out that he/she doesn't learn bad habits'.
For that he needs to be appraised "from outside". A mirror may help a little. Videos of his training may help a bit. However an evaluation of an experienced person is indispensable.

I know when I have been defeated, and what has been said against me is correct, - but in my opinion trying yourself is better than not trying at all

It's just an idea, but how about proactively implementing a distance learning option? It would involve being bidirectionally connected to a sensei through webcam with a high resolution and have sensei personally instruct you. For first year or two, you can hone your basic suburi, datotsu and different -ashi moves, then fumikomi, and so on. Anyway, you need to get connected with a good sensei who is willing to do this for you and your friends.

Perhaps Masahiro Sensei from Kendo-Guide.Com would be willing to Skype with a webcam or something like that.

There are some threads re: iai where kim taylor talks about not being able to see things on video. Its the same with kendo, additionally there is still the issue of the fact that you dont have a training partner. You can only go so far solo, and even with someone else at the same level as yourself. Many kendo exercises require a motodachi with more experience. Hiro already does the video correction bit via kendo guide. I could ask him what he thinks about doing a 2 way class on Tuesday if you like. The main issue now is he is recovering from shoulder surgery and cannot demonstrate well. That is also probably the reason he hasn't put out a video in awhile, though that is just my own conjecture and nothing he has said.
    I'm a super kendo slacker.
