Do they start out split? i seem to recall that they split during practice. Maybe it was that they start off with four splits and then through correct practice would split further into 8 and then 16
    I'm a super kendo slacker.

They start off split, usually 8 IIRC. e-bogu sells them here.

I agree with Neil that they haven't strayed into bullshido territory; it's kendo just not particularly good kendo. If they want to avoid using sports techniques then that's their business and fine by me.

Well, if they are attempting to do a "non-sport" version of kendo, then keeping the left heel on the ground is likely deliberate, and the fellow with the floaty heel is the one doing it "wrong".

Regarding the shinai they are using, I like this article, although it looks like these folks are lacquering their fukuro black, rather than red, so it's not a true "hikihada" shinai. I make no comment on the organization in question, but please do not confuse the fukuro-shinai with sports chambara foam swords. The fukuro-shinai is utilized by many koryu and is the primary training tool of one, and it is awesome.

I know what fukuro shinai are, though I have never used one. It's just, from the video, it looked like they were using the chanbara swords.

They are affiliated with these chaps, and that is the group that has been discussed previously. They have an anti-kendo diatribe in English on their site.

Equating large cuts=power=realism=a good thing, shows pretty much where their kendo is at I reckon.

Their 'sifu' claims to have 35 years of experience in Japanese MA's and 15 years in Chinese, plus Capoerira, Arnis, etc.
Their shodan teacher is not in the EKF register, neither is their 'grand master' (Who got his 5th dan in 1978?...does anyone know more about this guy...claims to have been the only foreigner in the All Japans in 1972)

Sorry..this stinks of homemade budo, especially if you look at their 'kendo kata'

Do you dislike the kata for the level of their performance or the techniques displayed?

I do have to agree with Josh about the heel thing, but I have no idea what their standard is.
I remember some guy asking Liang Baiping what the philosphy of Taiji was. Baiping looked at him and said, "The philosophy of Taiji is to crash through to their center and kill them".

Is that kata recognisable as anything or is it something they've discovered themselves? It always seems with these kata of dubious origin that the senior takes the winning role, and often in a decisive way, as opposed to the usual senior/uchidachi role of inititiating the attack and then 'losing'. Maybe this is the accepted way in loads of ryu, I don't know. At least he didn't kick her to the floor and slice her throat. Or spin around.

In my opinion, they are bad on both counts. The kata look made up and I don't know what rank the uchidachi is but he swings the bokken like baseball bat with too much wrist action and not enough power from the body. Even I can tell it looks incorrect.

I don't really care about all the b.s. dojos out there and I don't know why there are so many threads on this subject though. You're going to find them everywhere in the world because most people are basically selfish and financially motivated.
If people want to know about proper kendo, the information is easily accessible and the responsibility belongs to themselves to seek it out. And as for the instructors, you're not going to change them, so why care so much?

Out of curiosity, how common is it to have a mirror in a dojo? I am a beginner, so I view what I am used to as 'normal,' but don't really have any basis for comparison. The mirror in the video struck me as odd.

Depends on the dojo and what other uses the space has. For example gymnasiums don't tend to have mirrors while dance studios do.

But do you seriously think that they are comparable to shodan/nidan guys?...even their iaido?.

Ive seen what I would consider poor iaido pass at shodan/nidan level shinsa. Even kendo kata up to yondan I've seen people pass that clearly lack communication between uchidachi/shidachi and are just going off choreography.

Its not at the level I would use to pass someone at the shodan level, but for <2kyu i think its fine.
