If your budget is $600 - $700 you shouldn't have any problem finding a quality set of bogu. This is your first set? I'd say the any "beginners" set from either e-bogu or Miyako will do fine.

    Thanks Scott!
Yes, this will be my first set of Bogu. I've received from excellent feedback on this topic, including yourself. I think my problem was determining what was considered a good set. I think with the research I've done and the feedback I've received, I have a little understanding (I hope).

I too, was in this exact predicament of choosing between the two.

I ended up choosing the 1/2 priced Miyako Bogu over the 3mm E-Bogu.

I have the 3mm eBogu one. The deciding factor for me was first priority the kote, then second priority was the accessories that I could order and get cheaper while ordering with the Bogu. I have to say, the 3mm eBogu set is pretty good. It is definitely stiff when you first get it, but after I broke in to it, it is so soft - I couldn't believe it. Soft but protective. To me also, it does feel light.

Hope this helps. But I think by the time you read this post, the sale is over - and now their 3mm Keiryo set is on special for close out. I don't think that one is as good as the 3mm 4G set - because the Kote is different.

I already have the tsubasa (though havnt used it yet) and I cant believe how soft and flexible the tare, mendare are out of the box.
I`m shaping my kote now, but that will I`m sure be almost now effort at all compared to the stiffer varieties
of bogu. It is probably the lightest bogu I`ve ever had. that in itself will take some getting used to. almost feels
like I`m not wearing a tare or doh.beginner set, second training set can`t go wrong.
get your wallets out boys......."n" girls.

    @ Gilligan:
I also just received the Tsubasa, but I have to wonder: are you saying this is soft and flexible? Are normal bogu even stiffer? Because the tare are like boards on mine I bet that's down to inexperience on my side.

Lovely piece of kit though! And you're right about it being light! Lighter than I expected.

Two things that stand out for me:
    * They said the mendare would be shorter than usual, but I didn't expect this short If I tilt my head left or right, the end of the mendare actually touch my shoulders.
    * The kote are streamlined! There's very little padding on the fingers, save for where the knuckles connect to your hand. That's the only place with thick padding. I like how they look, but will maybe need to be careful with my fingers

I am mainly refering to the tare when you wrap it around your waist, the part that bends across your belly. Yours are like boards?? mine is very soft
all over though, even the large bits (what are they called) very easy to shape. I wouldnt call it stiff at all. depending on the material used and the pitch of the stiching, yes there are some very stiff bogu`s out there.

I do agree with you on the kote, could do with a bit more padding. But I dont think that is a reflextion on the bogu.
That type of kote seems to be common with many makers at the moment. I think they all could do witha bit of extra padding.
I believe kote with a leather fist area gives better support to the padding and hurts less. Which one requires less maintenace
and is longer lasting (in or around that price range) I dont know.

Ah no, my bad That part is nice and bendy!

With regards to the mendare: I think they are so flexible because of the diagonal stitching. I've tied them up to shape them before wearing them next class and I've made sure to bend them along the stitching. Good stuff!

No complaints there! I actually love the look of these sleek kote, as opposed to the "boxing gloves" I borrowed from sensei.

I think your kore will end up a bit thicker in a few months. I know what you mean by boxing gloves. But I think all kote go a little like that as te padding breaks up!

I wouldn't worry about your fingers.

And, I posted it already, but check out Chibabogu's page on breaking in kote!

Got my Tsubasa set last week and have been using it since. It is SO NICE. Everything is soft and flexible, which wasn't the case on my old bogu (even after two years of use!) The Kote were very nice right out of the box. They need little work to shape and I was pleased that I was able to move my wrists freely without having to break them in. First night of practice I was able to move without any stiffness in the Kote. I remember back on my other sets of Kote and they were really stiff for the first week or two (and that was with heavy breaking in at home).
Padding...well I think that's a case of personal preference. Some people prefer lighter Kote, others want more padding. So I don't have anything to say about that except that in my case they are just fine for me
And the pitch-stitching that they use really helps to make everything flexible and pliable from the very beginning. My opinion is that you can't go wrong with it. The quality of the bogu is top-notch and the half-off sale will help everyone save a ton of money

I did check their site again today and it looks like they are running half-off sales on most of their machine-stitched bogu (for anyone that is interested)

E-bogu has been sending me emails about the https://www.e-bogu.com/ProductDetail...-BOG-TQ4LWSET- bogu set. Is this a good beginner set? The price seems too good to be true.

This one is more of a stocktake sale. I think this one is above average to a beginner's set. If you look at this one compared to the new 4G 3mm Bogu from eBogu, it is quite similar but I noticed the kote is different. I don't think you can go wrong with this one.
