Facing straight forward or sideways (poll)

My theory is that people who prefer to face forward gravitate towards Kendo but people who prefer to face sideways gravitate towards different martial arts.

uhh...I don't think the correlation is true. I don't like skiing, but (used to) rollerblade, snowboard. I walk, run, drive facing forward. I go upstairs facing forward, and side step going downstairs.

I can't imagine the relatively few people who gravitate toward martial arts concern themselves at all with stance preference as a determining factor. I assume this poll is open for the next 2 years and 9 months mainly to find out how many here have a stance preference in other sports or recreational activities. Wake me when its over.

Really? I'm normally quite square on when I practice Iaido, and often square on when practicing Karate. Come to think about it, I was square on in the judo dojo most of the time too!

I prefer to stand sideways, but only because it makes it so much easier for me to move forward based on my how my knees and hips bend, due to being all twisty twist.

    *shrug*

I also write sideways. Gotta turn paper 180 degrees in order to write comfortably (and straight) on it. But that has nothing to do with the other thing. Just popped to mind.

I think people who do kendo are those who enjoy facing downward...but that's after the second practice if ya know what I mean.

I think that stance choice comes much later than hobby choice. Plus, there's a myriad other things to consider; no-one goes "Oh I just love to face forward! That means I should go skiing and roller-blading!".

And seriously, martial arts don't necessarily determine your stance. Even chuudan has both variations.

    180°? I turn the paper 720° when I write.

Well, my theory doesn't seem to be surviving the strict scientific rigor of this community. I think it's a little more subtle than "I choose to do X because I already do Y." I was hoping to at least find a correlation but it doesn't seem to be there in the small sample size. Ah well. Thanks for humoring me.
