    Kihon question

What is the benefit to practicing kihon from the yoi position, as opposed to the kamae position, if uchidachi is usually engaged from kamae?

I presume you mean specifically kuri tsuke, kuri hanashi and tai atari? The quick answer is that these are kihon and not kata, you are perfecting a movement rather than engaging an opponent.

You are perfectly free to practice from the kamae if you wish, and a lot of clubs do, but you pick up the movement from kamae when you start the partner kihon.

Actually in the last few seminars our sensei Ishido Sensei has urged us to remain in position for as long as possible when incorporating these three techniques in the kata. It can be very easy to get twitchy and move off the cutting line too early. Training these techniques from tsune no kamae in Sotai Dosa is an excellent way of staying settled and then getting used to moving quickly at the last moment.
