Soap?

So I remember hearing that if you put soap in a crease then iron it (thus melting it) it will keep and wash out when you want it to. Do you think that using soap in the pleats of the hakama and then ironing it well help the pleats stay? Or would that be disrespectful in some way?

The easiest way to keep the pleats in your Hakama is to lay it flat on the floor make sure they are all in the right place then roll your futon out on top of it and sleep on it over night. You will not get a better job any other way

Soaping creases is an old navy trick - but soap is strongly alkaline and will eventually rot the cloth fibres, so you could end up doing jigeiko in a dark blue grass skirt.

u could use neutral pH soap.. although quite expensive...

what about starch to make the pleats stay sharper? or would this be too hard and prevent movement?

starch would definitely be a better solution than soap, i think... due to the above mentioned reasons.
