Actually, those golden menganes are usually meant as gifts by grateful students to their high ranking senseis as part of an ultra-expensive set of bogu. The local boguya-san told me that the senseis would only wear such a set for demonstrations, and the menagne's not meant to be worn in day-to-day practice (duh...).
