    jidai and higo?

I know this isn't exactly iaido, but it seemed the best place to put it, sorry. When I look at different iaitos, I often see them catagorized, by jidai or higo. I'm wondering what these catagories are, and what are the differences between the two? If someone could please enlighten me, it would be much appreciated. Thank you very much.

I don't know a whole lot because I am still relatively new to Iaido, but I know those are two different koshirae(blade/sword types).

I think the biggest difference in the koshirae is the weight and balance.

Sorry for this not being too terribly informative.

But this thread does fit into "Iaido."

Thank you, yeah, I noticed the jidai have square pommels (right word?) while the higo have round pommels, is that all? Thanks again for your replies.

    Good observation!

Also, the tsuka has different fluting length wise.

Similarly, in terms of cross-sectinal cut, one is more oval while the other is more flat with rounded tips (think gel-caplet). I think higo is the more oval one...

Interestingly enough, in Draeger's Japanese Swordmanship, they actually advise against the Higo, and advise the use of Tensho because the reverse fluting of the tsuka keeps the sword from slipping out of your hand. This is probably due to TSKSR influence of using the pinky-under grip.

I like the Higo style myself.

I don't know too much about either, but just from what I see, I like the higo style more too. Thanks for your help!

Same thing as the one answered in this topic, just a different spelling. It probalby has to do with the Tsuba shape. I love square shaped tsuba's.

I think I may of found spomething regarding Higo and Jidae(sp?)
Hon Koshirae, translated as a professional grade sword, is a great example of the sword craftsmanship for Tozando Iaito sword series. so it may have something to do with professionall grade.
It might also have to do with the making period resembling the sword:

    The Jidai

Japanese Samurai spirit, Bushido and Japanese culture are introduced.
Also, Japanese cultural and historical goods are sold in this site.
We have many kinds of Japanese sword(katana),Iaito(Katana for Iaido) Japanese armors.

    About Japanese sword(Katana)

For Samurai, Japanese sword (Katana) was more important than his life. Japanese sword (Katana) was equal to soul of Bushido. So Japanese sword (Katana) had to be not only tough and sharp but also beautiful.

    About "The Jidai"

Japanese period drama and film are called "Jidai Geki", and Japanese period novel is called "Jidai Novel". We can learn the essence of bushido from good quality works of those.
