Do a lot of reading in the forums. Search particularly for the term "wallhanger". Until you can identify them yourself, ask someone more knowledgable before you spend money on anything.

YOU ARE WRONG. NO wallhanger is safe!!! WHY is that so hard to understand?

Furthermore, if you have NO training and are NOT in a dojo, you do NOT need a sword to play with. Unless you like the idea of losing fingers and perhaps a limb.
YES it happens! NO sensei would dare let you use one of these swords as well.

Geez, why do people insist on playing with 3 foot long VERY sharp objects?????

It doesn't make you cool!! It just makes you very stupid. Sorry.

*Hits him 1000 times with a wet noodle*

If you only knew how ridiculous this sounds... Hooooo.... *tries to stay calm*

    *faints dead away again*

More people get hurt by cheap dull knives than pricey sharp ones. Dull knive mean you need more force so you slip more. Spending 10 dollars on some sword makes it less safe not more

    1.

Problem: Looking for a sword on eBay for less than $50.

Solution: The only swords that sell for less than $50 are made out of 440 stainless steel.

    2.

New Problem: Stainless steel is brittle.

Solution: I plan to use it for swinging, nothing in contact with the blade except air and the saya. Just a side note, I will not tap the blade on a table

Question: Will a stainless steel blade be able to retain its form when swung properly? In other words, can a stainless steel blade snap or warp simply by swinging with its edge leading?

    3.

New Problem: Tsuka must be able to withstand the force of the swing.

Solution: I will purchase a sword with at least 1 mekugi and a full tang. On a side note, I have only discovered eBay auctions where 3 metal mekugi were used in swords with a full tang.

So from this, I am interested in purchasing a sword from eBay for less than $50. It will feature a blade made out of 440 stainless steel, a full tang, and 3 metal mekugi.

The problem with metal mekugi is that it could slip out during the swing, but since the sword has 3, the chances of the blade flying out of the handle is very slim.

Additional information on mekugi can be found here (scroll down near the middle) http://www.webdiva4hire.com/kenshinkan/suitability.html

The only problem I have left is the question in #2. Any other problems that are revealed to me will truly be appreciated. I want to minimize the level of danger with the use of a cheap sword.

Hey optomitrist, can you give a review of the quality of the sword that you purchased?

Firstly, please dont show a condescending attitude towards the memebers of this forum by posting a link explaining what a mekugi is.

Secondly I think I know what will help you. Follow these steps:

    1) go on ebay and buy a Kill Bill sword (preferably Bill's because it has the demon )

    2) Send it to a sword sharpening place, get it AS sharp as you can

    3) When it gets back to you, take the air dry clay stuff that and make a little "U" shape on the end of the handle ( =======|} the } is the "U"

    4) tie a chain to the little hook thing you made (preferable a SHORT chain)

    5) spin it as fast as you can

This will cause centrifical force, making the sword safe for fighting with. This is what samurai would do in order to make rock hard swords that cound cut through metal poles. The reason that not all samurai did this is because the price of air dry clay was extremely expensive.

This may cost about 100 dollars but it will last a lifetime (mainly because it is indestructible but also because you will be dead LONG before the sword breaks). I have done this with almost all my swords and was able to completely re upholster my couches in 5 minutes, cut through 10 telephone poles, and construct a Bently Continental GT. The sword will cut through obstacles like a hot knive through butter (minus the sizzling sound, however there is a way to cause the sword to make that sound which requires 1 pound of Plastique and your mouth, the sword itself isnt actually used).

Ok, OR you could spend 100-120 dollars and buy a cheap wallhanger and use my method. We arent in feudal japan, air dry clay is dirt cheap.

    OMG!!!!

FOR ALL OF YOU GUYS WHO READ MY POST ABOUT MAKING A SWORD INDESTRUCTIBLE:

DONT DO IT BEFORE READING THIS

It has to be BLUE air dry clay.

I REPEAT. IT MUST BE BLUE.

Otherwise the mollecular structure of the clay will NOT be stable and serious injuries can occur.

And you prefer the "wrong" and "unsafe way"?

Folks, for anyone who might be considering following this guys suggestions. I suspect you had better think twice. While I suppose it is possible he's stumbled on some truly fantastic and dirty cheap way to turn utter garbage into something slightly better than utter garbage, it seems unlikely. His apparent unwillingness to present his idea to the folks who do this kinda stuff everyday is not a good sign.

Charles, you might want to bring your humour detector into the shop for a tuneup.

    HUMOR???

    HUMOR?

This is a REAL method. Taught to me by a man I trained with. Granted he wore a tin foil hat and kept talking about aliens eating my soul. But I have tried it.

Well. You'd be suprised the wackos I've encountered online and the garbage they've spouted. Hard to discern humor sometimes online.
