size of leather on 38

hi all
problem:

I have 3 brand new girls in my club!

that is not the problem

The problem is that I have no 38 size club shinai at all

I don't want to get them to buy anything till their sure they want to continue training

I am willing to cut back some slats and make a "Frankstien" shinai

But my problem is......wait for it....

I don't know the lenght of the leather handle(tskua?)
to fit onto the shinai.

any help out there?

also are any other differences in the leather fittings?

erm... i think the diameter is also different on a 38
but, just so you know, the length of the handle (while on shinai) is about 13.5 inches on my new shinai.

Generally speaking,the 38 size leather is 1 or 2cm shorter than 39 size.It's not a big problem.cas there isnt an correct length for it. you may change the leather freely in rang of 1-3cm based on 39 size leather .
In another way,you may let the girls use 37 or 39 size shinais till they get the 38 size shinais.

Also, you could let them use bokken if you have any. I would have a personal preferance to use bokken for everything except for ji-geiko/shiai. In which I would use a shinai. I don't take ken-do, but, I'd rather train my students with bokken. Besides, heavier wood= stronger arms. Anyway, this is just a n00b opinion. Please no flaming/bashing, my views could indeed change.
