Question Why are people so strict about spelling.

Why are people so strict about spelling on the Kendo-World fourms? As long as one understands what one is speaking about I dont really see how it matters.

It doesn't really matter, the idiotic fools that complain about it merely want post-count. :P

I'd love to see how this turns out under Flames....

    thats bad grammar...

just kidding. the only thing i notice is when people spell out thier post like were in a chat room. (for example, ur, 2, u, and all that jazz) but even that i dont mind. i just have to sit down, slow down and take some time to read it. it completely blows my mind...

Why are Senseis so strict about proper posture, zanzhin and kiai? I mean, as long as I hit the target who needs the rest?

Since when was it okay to be lazy and ignorant? At the end, maybe you are right...it doesn't matter. BUT once again its your own personal discipline and pride.

    Unhappy

KhawMengLee, That doesn't belong in this thread please post it in the proper thread. If you want to talk about it PM me or post it on the Flames section or disuss it in the Kashiwade thread. To be honest I apoligized and now you are posting where I post just to piss me off. Spelling has nothing to do with proper posture, zanzhin or kiai.

Huh? Dude, its not a personal attack. And pissing someone off over the net is soooooooo unfullfiling.

As my Sensei said, "Dojo is life."

Do you tie your Keikogi and hakama knots properly, making sure your bogu himo is neat and even because Sensei tells you to? Or do you do it because you have pride in how you should appear? After keiko when you are in seiza after training, do you just collapse in a pile and dump your gear into your bogu bag? Or do you fold it properly and pack it neatly?

Kendo, as part of its training, teaches us to be tidy and not to cut corners. This is a good virtue to have and its a good life attitude. Its the same with your spelling and grammar. I'm not telling you how to live your life but I feel that lazyness and mistakes are not things we should accept.

Just browsing these forums, I've grown to look up to a lot of the members. People like KhawMengLee and Kaoru and a few other people. Hehe

I guess what I posted before...

...Was a bit immature and foolish of me. I mean I don't like people getting mad at people for such menial things, and it's probably wrong to do so. Yet I myself kind of get annoyed seeing all the chat abbreviations. They tend to bother me. Obviously, how someone talks, or types, shows a lot about that person. Personally I can see myself looking up to, and respecting people a lot more, due to how properly and correctly they talk or type, compared to the people who just cut corners, and do it the wrong way because it makes it easier. Even if what the person cutting corners is talking about is respectable and is of a good point.

    On my previous post...

If the one making mistakes (Not 'cutting corners') isn't familiar with the Language it's completely different. I respect anyone who takes on a second language, it's not easy. I want to learn Japanese quite a bit, but it's really hard for me, especially because I'm homeschooled. :P

I just wanted to make it clear that what I said doesn't apply to people making mistakes or errors because it's not their first language.

Since there is a quite large amount of people on this board that has english as a second language, writing understandably is important.
I don't really care if the spelling is wrong if the flag next to someones name is swedish, italian, chinese, etc., but I do get a little irritated when people with US or UK flags have a sloppy spelling. I donät really care if long hard words are misspelled (since I would probably not always notice ) but when there is a large amount of "y0 hav I s33n yo b4?" i can get a bit grumpy.

And yes, I am this finicky when it comes to swedes writing swedish as well

Who cares about the spelling nazis, really? Its not like this is an english literature discussion board now is it?

A bit of perspective from some people would be nice every now and then eh?

"Spelling nazis" are one thing. I don't care if people misspell difficult words. It's the ones using slang I get irritated at. I am quite familiar with formal english, but some forum posts use such an excess of slang expressions and AOL/1337-speak that it takes me a long time to decipher it. If you have english as your first language, it is probably not a problem to you, since you have probably seen or used the expressions and slang yourself, but for us foreigners it can be a hard time.
I mean, if I was visiting a forum with swedish as only allowed language, and it was inhabited by a lot of foreigners I wouldn't be using the slang that exists in my language since that would probably make a lot of people confused.
I think that if you know a language, you should use it as good as you can if it is used in a formal context (which I consider all public internet forums to be). If you don't know all grammatic rules, so be it, but if you do: use them.

Actually, I think the number of threads using "bad" language on KW is quite low. The only thing that came to my mind was that a lot of people don't capitalize the i in I. God that's annoying
