    Training with a shinken

Hey, I'm just wondering if its the same elsewhere. We regularly have kendo/kenjutsu training sessions with shinken, typically we do armoured practice and then kata without armour.

A lot of people say that shinken are too expensive for this kind of thing, but really you can get one for quite cheap. I got mine on ebay for £25. They last longer if you go easy on the tree-cutting practice.

A shinken for £25? Are you really sure it's a real Japanese shinken? I find it very hard to believe you could find one for that price on ebay. Normally those things are on the upwards of US$10,000 or so.

25 pounds? Well, I must say that you are one lucky guy if you got a genuine shinken for that little. Most probably, it's either damaged beyond repair or it's simply a ceremonial sword.

I do not wish to be rude, by how much experience do you have in kenjutsu? Becuase I tell you now, I do not want to hold my shinken for another few years! In fact, in our kenjutsu dojo, we only use shinken for tameshigiri. Only that. Otherwise, our sensei is quite firm in making use us bokuto and iaito for kumitachi and kata. An iaito emulates a shinken, except for durability and the cutting edge. Anjin-san, I would recommend you doing your katas with iaito, not shinken.

    Anjin-san,

You had better be joking!!! I suppose you put this here for my benefit?!?

Just in case you aren't, I suppose you fancy being hung by your toenails for using a WALLHANGER?!? AND, for using shinken at all??? And sparring with them nonetheless... *falls over and faints* I KNOW you have read my posts regarding this sort of thing, and you know what I think, too. I'll spare you until I find out the rest... hehehe... *shaking head grinning*

Anyway, SHAME ON YOU for making sure I bite!!

    *walks away laughing at Anjin-san*

P.S. You must have been really bored to have posted this nonsense...

I've heard of teachers who hold 5th dan in iai and still choose not to use shinken yet you spare with them? interesting,,,,,,, what type of armor?

Man you gotta be really careful with your cheapo one Anjin san. I spent £35 on one and the blade fell off when I hit my partner on the head with it! It nearly fell into my foot! Yikes! I'm ok though, and Dave only bled for a few minutes, and his ear is fine now.

I think I'll spend a bit more on my new one, like Dartagnan, maybe £60 or so.
