should be no flame to this

in reality it is two different fighting styles(though fencing is more of a sport than a martial art nowadays). Both have advantages and disadvantages.

The funniest argument i ever saw with kendo vs. fencing, a fencer made the comment "a quick stop thrust to the wrist and ive won".....lets think logicaly, you stab me int the wrist and pull the sword out, i continue the swing and remove you head from your shoulders.......who scored a point and who won a fight? REAL fencing was more oriented towards damage over time, were as the japanese sword arts are oriented towards one strike with MASSIVE damage. Afencer could probably kill a kendoka, but i think he would be dead as well. Theres just not enough potential to do enough damage quickly enough.

    Just my opinion though

I personally have nothing against fencing. I have respect for anyone who does anything related to the sword. (Except fighting with driftwood on the beach...). I like to watch fencing to see how they move as oppose to how we move. When someone asks if I do anything besides sit at home I tell them I fence. Then they ask a ton of other dumb questions (yes...there ARE dumb questions) and I end up explaining kendo to them. Sometimes I can get off with just saying that I fence (which is what I want..because I don't want to talk to 3/4 of the people who ask me in the first place).

The only reason why I said driftwood-do is a joke is because it cannot match my Hiten-Mitsurugi Ryu. Bwahahaha, my Sakabatou is undefeatable!

    heh

the idea behind this was that i have seen this thread in other forums and it turned into a complete flame between the fencers and kendo lovers. things got really interesting when some guy came on who did both and started to pick out faults and similiarities in both sports. Just thought it maight get a bit more interesting in flames 'cos you can really let rip (and i dont mean farting )!

Having tried both at a beginner level of experience, Kendo is definitely my favourite out of the two. (Thats probably also why I've stuck with Kendo...)

you haven't got all of the spirituallity thing going in fencing. It's a classic case of olympicisation and now macdojo's are springing up all over england.
