    White Bogu

Does anyone know where I can purchase good white bogu? I have been looking for something hand made (not machine stitched) or at least less than the 4mm on e-bogu and such. Does anyone know of 2mm or less? Thanks

You're a little confused - hand-made bogu doesn't have such tight stitching. Most people buy 1.2 or 1.5 bu, which would be 3.6 mm and 4.5 mm in metric measurement. The tightest sold is 1 bu, which is 3 mm. Even if you were looking for a high-quality machine stitched bogu, the best ones are usually 3 mm. The 2 or 2.5 mm stuff is mostly about marketing.

I don't know any mainstream suppliers who sell high-quality white bogu. That's one of the reasons most of the senior players use blue bogu.

    machine vs hand stitched

machine bogu is nice. I will admitt that. I currently have 2mm indigo bogu but since I am female I was hoping to get the readitional white bogu. However, everything I am seeing online is not as high of quality as my current bogu. Therefore buying white bogu would defeat the purpse of buying newer and better bogu. Any ideas?

The thing is that even in Japan it is relatively rare to see women in white bogu. Most just go with the blue bogu and since white bogu is not so popular, especially beyond the high school level they are not made in the higher quality. If you are adamant in getting high quality white bogu and have lots of money I suggest you contact Chiba Bogu (or an expensive bogu shop) and ask if they can make you a custom white bogu. Chiba Bogu's bogu is 6mm machine but the way it is made makes it at least equal to hand stitched (make a search on Mine Bogu or Chiba Bogu)

    Kendoshop

But a word of warning, it gets dirty easily.

Do you have a white bogu now?
If so I think this calls for another picture.

That's subjective, some people think it looks pretty, some people think it looks like a squashed tomato on a wall.

White bogu is nice to look at, but high maintenance. After some time, it will not look white anymore and started to turn beige or get dirty.

    Am I too late????.
I have been wearing white bogu for the last twelve years. As I have only just scraped through my San Dan grading, I decided to grow up and purchase some blue Bogu. As it stands it is actually very nice especially the purple hemo(?). However to be quite honest I am thinking about buying another set of white bogu so that I can mix and match. It gets dirty. Hmmmm Sounds like people don't let their bogu air after every practice. Also the kote are actually very cheap. My original pair were ten years old before they split where the stitching meets the padded part of the kote. I will get them mended. My do has worn out when the upper area becomes so loose that you can prod it backwards and forth. Whoops I deviate. What it comes down to is personal preference for me. I have had guys say to my face that they don't like women fighting in white bogu. To be quite honest I am big and fat but wearing white makes me look huge (cue remarks from various muppets known to meeee!). I happen to rather like white bogu especially with a sparkly blood red do. But then it's not really what colour you wear to retain the spirit of kendo is it??. All together now......The concept of kendo is to mould the mind and spirit etc etc

    KendoShop

I found out a few days ago about KendoShop.com's sale right now. They have 3mm White bogu that seems to be really good quality (I'm not qualified to say for sure) for less than 400USD. Any comments? I wanted to wait to get white bogu but at this price would it be a good idea to just go ahead and get it now? What does everyone think of the quality? And is the only difference between white and indigo bogu the color?

The consensus is that Kendoshop is very good value for the price but is not as good as others in the long run. I think one of the main issues is the lacquer on the men falling off really fast. I've never used them personally.
