Thread: Japan 8 Dan Test in Tokyo

I am truly amazed!!! Many congratulations to Tagawa sensei. Man, I'll bet it hasn't sunk in for him. I just heard the news this weekend, and I still can't believe it.
Now the United States has an authentic, Japan-made 8-dan!! We are very proud of Tagawa sensei!

It's not as if there were no Japanese hachidans in the US before, though I don't know whether they got their dan before moving to the US.

However, I think Tagawa sensei is the first one from the US in a while that passed hachidan in Japan.

Question: who was the last sensei from the US that got hachidan before Tagawa sensei?

I believe the AUSKF has awarded hachidan to some of it's most respected nanadan but that Tagawa is the first american to actually take the test in Japan and pass it.

I don't know of any hachidans (from America) that have gone to Japan tested, and passed other than Tagawa sensei. The only ones that have (honorary or not) that I know of are Hazard Sensei, Miyahara sensei, and Miyata sensei.. all from California.
